Busy Times, A National Award, A Viral Post, and recognition by World Renowned Educator Diane Ravitch!

It's been a busy couple of months!

In March, I was honored by the Kennedy Center with the Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award. My former student, the phenomenal Ischel Gonzalez-Kelso, wrote a beautiful essay nominating me for it, and I was floored to be chosen as one of the 14 teachers nationwide to win it. Ischel is now in medical school and continues to inspire many with her brilliant mind and kind heart.

You can read her essay here:

The Omaha World Herald was kind enough to publish a story about it, which you can read here:

I was privileged to be invited to attend a tea in Washington D.C. with the Secretary of Education at the Department of Education to discuss safe schools for students. Maddie Fennel, a phenomenal educator for whom I have a ton of admiration and respect, nominated me for this. They liked what I had to say and invited me to do a guest essay for them on "Homeroom" which is the official blog of the United States Department of Education. You can read it here:

Just last week, I wrote a Facebook status thanking public school teachers for doing all that they do. Much to my surprise, the status went viral with more than 300 shares, and the news reached out and asked if I would tweak it a bit so that they could publish it! I did so, and that story has been shared 1,085 times as of yesterday. You can read that essay here:

And finally, today, on my birthday, I discovered that world renowned education reformist Diane Ravitch, who is an educational hero of mine, had read my essay and had shared it on her blog! Dr. Ravitch has one of the most widely read educational blogs in the world. I couldn't imagine a better birthday present! You can see that here:
